Bobbin lace was brought to India by Christian missionaries from France, Belgium, England etc in the 17th Century. Treated as heirlooms by high society of Europe, it is an art form still attracting high skill artisans in India.

These delicate glass mats are made by women in convents from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Bobbin lace, the more intricate cousin of crotchet lace, is made by braiding and twisting single linen threads wound on bobbins. As the pattern progresses, it is pinned down on a pillow to keep it from losing shape. While also an amateur art form, high complexity designs like these can only be done by masters and may require the simultaneous movement of upto 60 bobbins - a daunting exercise in concentration. Sure to be treasured by the discerning, these mats are a rare find indeed.
