In the jewel traditions of Awadh, Ganga-Jamuni is a term used for a piece of jewelry featuring both gold and silver. Gold is associated with the fiery and passionate Ganga, whereas silver is reserved for the gentle Yamuna.
The Ganga box is made in the chitai tradition of Varanasi. It is inspired by the river on the banks of which it was made. Chitai is different from etching because the shapes are beaten from the back of the metal sheet. The slightest bit of extra pressure can rip through the sheet and damage the whole piece. This restraint is only possessed by an expert.
