Kuthira Vilakku Hanging Diya
Price inclusive of GST
The Kuthira vilakku ( translation: Horse Lamp) is a traditional ancient object of Kerala. The shape is designed so that on hanging the lamp doesn't sway around, but swings back to its original angle. This property comes in handy when it is used as a procession lamp hanging from a devotee's fingers. Procession with elephants are common in kavus of local dieties.
Kerala produces a variant of bell metal for its auspicious items, not to be confused with the far more homogenous alloy- brass.
At almost a solid 600g weight, this bell metal lamp is a rare find. Notice the detailing in the horse's face.
