The word Thewa means "setting" in local dialects of the Malwa plateau. Thewa is the pinnacle of dexterity because it requires cutwork and embossing on 23kt gold sheet. This is done by affixing the gold sheet, also called "Thewa Ki Patti" onto a board using a secret lac-resin mixture. Cutwork is done by knocking off outlines with an extremely fine chisel. Once the design is ready, the sheet is peeled off by reheating the resin. This is then fused with coloured glass by heating.
Thewa was invented 400 years ago in Pratapgarh, Rajasthan for regal jewelry. These gorgeous cufflinks are a fitting specimen of this glorious artform. Material: 23kt gold sheet mounted on gold plated silver & brass
